Effective Meetings
Managers generally spend 25 to 75 percent of their time in
meetings. Since well-run meetings can produce certain results more effectively
than other methods, learning how to hold effective meetings is a key leadership activity.
Meetings can be extremely useful for such things as:
- sharing information
- getting "buy in"
- utilizing peoples potential
- obtaining diverse opinions, and
- exploring different alternatives
Unfortunately, meeting participants frequently complain
that the meetings they attend waste their time rather than help them do their jobs more
effectively. Ineffective meetings consume precious time and resources and often create,
rather than resolve, problems. Conversely, effective meetings reinforce common goals,
leverage peoples time and energy and result in better ideas and decisions.
In this module, participants will identify a variety of
factors that cause meetings to be ineffective. They will learn the factors that
distinguish effective and ineffective meetings and they will develop strategies for
overcoming the problems they encounter in the meetings they plan and attend. Getting the
most out of meetings takes personal discipline and adherence to time tested
characteristics.

understand:
